SCOTTISH SHALE LOGO DESIGNS

SCOTTISH SHALE ANIMATED LOGO DESIGN

To create the above animation I first created a 2D vector of the logo. I then imported this into Autodesk Maya and extruded the typography to create 3D geometry. After this, I created a nurbs sphere and set up a camera directly in front of it on it. (and directly behind the vector path for the graphic element of the 2D logo) I then projected the logo curve path (graphic element) onto and through the nurbs sphere and cut away the ‘white space’. My next step was to convert everything into polygons and texture & colour it. I applied lighting and animated the ‘cut out’ polygon sphere by rotating it on on the Y axis. See below for a visualisation of this.

FAVICON LOGO DESIGN

A screengrab from the Scottish Shale website with the ‘almost inverse’ colour variation for the site favicon – to suit the white tabs of most browser windows. I recommended only using this colour scheme for the favicon. It gives the best representation of the original logo design when set within the confines of a browser tab. (Very limited pixel numbers and page real estate meaning details are hard to achieve.)

WATERMARK DESIGNS

Watermarks for this logo design are grayscale and set at 35% opacity. I’ve darkened them slightly for this example – to highlight them slightly. But, in reality they are not as intrusive as they appear. Only high resolution, plated images had watermarks covering parts of the subject. For smaller images (up to 1200px wide), the square watermark (bottom left) would be used.

3D SCOTTISH SHALE LOGO (Rock) – ANIMATED

The black in the background of this footage is transparent when layered on top of any other video footage. Rock geometry created using Autodesk Mudbox, Maya, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop.

A Circular Variation. This logo design is also well suited to social media profile dimensions. Or, as in the example above – if the design needs a circular element for symmetry.

ASSETS FOR ALMOND VALLEY HERITAGE TRUST
Below are some short renders of assets created for Almond Valley Heritage Trust. These assets were designed to be included in various marketing campaigns and screen-based promotional material. I did not design the original 2D logo. However, I did have to recreate it in illustrator as there was only a low resolution jpeg available for use at the time. I created a 3D scene (with virtual automated cameras, lighting, caustics, shadows) and then rigged the tail of the logo object and animated it. I also imported an OBJ file of the 3D logo into Adobe After Effects and used Trapcode Form plug-in to create particles which I manipulated to form the logo in 3D space.
